Three-time Grammy winner Ne-Yo is in the middle of controversy because of his views on gender identity he shared during an interview on VladTV with host Gloria Velez.
After exclaiming his love for the LGBTQ+ community, Ne-Yo said, “I feel like the parents have almost forgotten what the role of a parent is,” he began. “If your little boy comes up to you and says, ‘Daddy I wanna be a girl,’ you just let him rock with that?”
He continued, “Where did he get that? If you let this 5-year-old little boy eat candy all day, he’s gonna do that. Like, when did it become a good idea to let a 5-year-old, a 6-year-old, a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision? When did that happen? Like, I don’t understand that.”
At 43, Ne-Yo told Gloria that he’s from an era where “man was a man and a woman was a woman.” He went on, “There was two genders and that’s just how I rocked,” he said. “You could identify as a goldfish if you feel like, that ain’t my business. It becomes my business when you try to make me play the game. I’m not gonna call you a goldfish.”
It didn’t take long for comments to pour in from the public once the interview was made public, (you can see the interview below). Response was so overwhelming, Ne-Yo issued video statement he called an apology, but it certainly wasn’t. To watch that video CLICK HERE. He later posted on Twitter (now ‘X’) to issue a more formal statement that tied up things nicely, but drew criticism that it was written by his PR team, and not himself. Here’s that tweet:
